Titan Talk on Health Radio

This fall Dr. Clinton was a radio guest on the Barbra Alexander show on Health Radio. She spoke about a skin rejuvenation procedure she offers at Timeless Skin Solutions called Titan. You can listen to that program on the Web.
Titan utilizes a safe infrared light source with a unique wavelength filtering design to uniformly heat the dermis. The non-invasive Titan Procedure protects the epidermis through continous contact cooling while the infrared light heats the deep dermis. No down-time or pain medication is required. It is a nonablative, nonsurgical lifting procedure which causes the collagen in the dermis to contract and tighten. It is not a laser but it does employ infrared light to lift and tighten the skin so that gravity changes are softened, fine wrinkles are less obvious and pores are shrunk.

It can be used for tightening skin over various areas of the body, including the forehead, the lower face along the chin line, under the eyes, the hands, the abdomen, around the knees, and in some cases the breasts.

Get Yourself Ready for Spring

This spring healthy skin is in fashion for everyone, not just women. Men and children have special skin needs too. Sunscreens are a must to prevent sunburns and aging. A daily moisturizer with a built-in sunscreen should be on the vanity of every bathroom. The broadest daily sunscreen is currently manufactured by LaRoche Posay called Anthelios. Cosmetic elegance with ease of absorption is a must and Anthelios has it. Taking time every morning to apply a moisturizer with sunscreen is a habit everyone should form.

In addition to protecting your skin, you may want to consider permanent hair reduction. Lasers designed to reduce or eliminate hair growth have been on the market for more than 20 years. All skin types can be treated with lasers, but individuals with dark skin tones should ask if the laser or light source being used for their treatment is best for their skin. Treatments typically take 5-60 minutes depending on the area and the size of the area where hair is being removed. Most lasers will permanently reduce hair 80-90%, although touch up treatments may be required biannually. Laser treatments can also be done on all body areas. That means no more back hair for men and no more bumps in the bikini area for women.

When spring cleaning your home, be sure to clean up your vanity. Toss products that are old or you found to be ineffective. Just as we find the need to change clothing and hair styles with age, skin care needs should also be adjusted. Products that worked last year may not be addressing your needs this year. Stop in and have a chat with an esthetician who can address your skin care needs.

Finally, enjoy your life. Make sure to make time each day for yourself. Eat well. Give love to those around you. Take a day of rest each week and try and keep the same time each day to rise and to go to sleep. You’ll develop a rhythm and then you’ll be able to accomplish all of those New Year’s Resolutions, which might have started collecting dust by now!

Winterproof Your Skin

Cold weather and heat will dry, damage and injure the outer barrier of skin. We should seal in what those layers need to stay healthy and moist. Dehydrated skin lacks moisture, but oils are what seals the barrier in order to keep water inside.

Here are some external tips to keep winter skin in top shape

  • Lower the thermostat
  • Avoid hot showers or baths
  • Drink more water (dry weather and cold medicines cause dehydration)
  • Do not slack off on the sunscreen

Here's how to get the most out of your products

  • Layer products like you layer clothes in the winter
  • Use a a daily exfoliant and a moisturizer that will trap moisture and increase skin’s moisturizing ability
  • Don’t just add twice the amount of cream. When outside be sure to use a product with silicone and/or shea butter

Here are some product suggestions

  • Kinerase - Uses kinetin and zeitin to seal in moisture, has glycerin
  • Anthelios with mexoryl - Has sunscreen and dimethicone, glycerin, stearic acid
  • Derma Rx Rejuvenator - For red skin, uses glycosaminoglycans and glycerin for moisturizing
  • Kinerase Lip Treatment - Jojoba and grape seed oil, hyaluronic acid, kinetin, oligopeptide

Makeup Alley - Love This Site

I'm such a fan of Makeupalley! I wanted to pass this site along to my readers. They have great advice on skin care. It was launched in 1999 as a small community of beauty consumers. Now it's one of the largest beauty social networks on the Web. The product reviews are very helpful.

It's important to me that I offer the best skin care lines to my patients. That means offering the best products available according to medical research and patient opinions. Your feedback is very valuable.

I believe patients benefit from consulting with a physician before starting a new skin care treatment. It can save time and money (who needs bottles and bottles of products that don't work!) Sometimes topical agents aren't the best option for certain skin issues. If that is the case, I can suggest very advanced medical skin care with lasers, lights, and peels.

All Procedures Have Risks

Last week it was reported that BBC newsreader Kate Silverton is taking legal action against a leading surgeon after undergoing Fraxel laser surgery that left her face so badly marked she was unable to work for two weeks.

She's quoted as saying, "It's been awful. I went in to get some minor scarring on my cheeks treated...I was told it would be a routine procedure and I'd be back to work in days. The treatment, however, caused a massive skin reaction."

All procedures have risks. It is unfortunate that Kate had to endure this. Some people experience Fraxel as a no downtime procedure. However, the best use for the procedure, to repair acne scars, typically does require some downtime due to the depth and energy used in the procedure. When using higher energy, the risk for post inflammatory hypo and hyperpigmentation rise significantly. Swelling and redness can also be quite severe. Time and topical creams can improve discoloration, but results may be permanent.

If you have experienced negative side effects to Fraxel or other laser skin treatments, contact Dr. Carol Clinton at http://www.timelessskinsolutions.com/. I am able to treat conditions that occur from botched laser treatments.
