Improve Sun Damage Layer by Layer with IPL

Take a look at your arm and count how many freckles you see. Chances are you’re wearing a lot more freckles than you did as a child. Sun damage resulting in freckles, age spots, sun spots and moles can pop up anywhere on the body - especially areas that are frequently exposed to sun light. Sometimes that damage can lead to serious skin issues including skin cancer. But treatments like Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL) can remove the damage leaving healthy, refreshed skin. Dr. Carol Clinton of Timeless Skin Solutions in Dublin says IPL is very effective in the treatment of sun-related aging.

“The advantage of IPL over other types of pigment and vascular removal methods is that it is fast, the recovery time is short, and the risk of side effects are low,” says Dr. Clinton. “The procedure simultaneously addresses a variety of common concerns including broken capillaries, rosacea, redness, age spots, and even enlarged pores.”

IPL therapy uses an intense light that passes through the top layer of skin and is absorbed by brown, black or blue pigment particles within the skin. The energy emitted by the laser light causes the pigment cells to break into miniscule particles which are removed by the body’s immune system.

“The light is emitted in pulses which can feel like someone has snapped an elastic band against the skin, but most patients find this treatment quite comfortable,” says Dr. Clinton.

A treatment may take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the area(s) being treated. After treatment, the skin turns to a dark, superficial crust. Once the crusting turns over - typically in one to two weeks, the underlying skin gradually changes from a pink shade to the color of the surrounding skin.

“It’s a great option for various areas of the body including the decollete, hands, arms and legs.”

The number of treatments needed to remove sun damage depends on the severity of the damage - typically one to three treatments. Costs range from $150 to $750 per treatment.

Restore Your Body After Baby

Carrying a baby and giving birth is a life changing experience. While the female body is designed to reproduce, the after effects can make women self conscious about their bodies. Stretch marks, loose skin, and discoloration affect most moms, but many aren’t aware that there are treatments available that can improve the look and feel trouble spots. Dr. Carol Clinton of Timeless Skin Solutions in Dublin, a medical spa that features the latest in prescription-grade skin care products and treatments, recommends these options to her patients:

For Stretch Marks:
Depending on the severity of stretch marks, improvement can be seen with use of topical products and/or the Titan™ procedure. Emu Oil is a highly moisturizing, natural skin softener with rejuvenating properties. It is recommended for use during and after pregnancy. Kojic acid and azelaic acid are both effective as lightening agents. By combing these topicals with Titan, a non-invasive procedure which reduces redness and improves elasticity, women can see results in as little as eight weeks.
For Discoloration:
Discoloration is a common side effect of pregnancy. It frequently appears on the face. Topicals that contain Kojic and/or azelaic acid can significantly improve skin discoloration. After pregnancy, retinA and hydroquinone can also safely be used for discoloration. For cases that require more intense treatment, Dr. Clinton recommends Pearl™ or Intense Pulse Light (IPL) therapy. Pearl combines the impact of resurfacing lasers with the gentleness and safety of non-invasive procedures to treat damaged skin. IPL passes through the top layer of skin and is selectively absorbed by brown, black or blue pigments particles within the skin. Those cells then break into miniscule particles that are removed by the body’s immune system.
For Loose Skin:
The Titan procedure is recommended to tighten the loose skin that remains after 9 months of pregnancy. While the procedure does not aid in weight loss, it does tighten the skin improving elasticity.

“It’s never too late to address skin issues related to pregnancy. Even if you had your children 20 or 30 years ago, you can still improve your skin’s tone and texture,” says Dr. Clinton.
