Restore Your Body After Baby
Carrying a baby and giving birth is a life changing experience. While the female body is designed to reproduce, the after effects can make women self conscious about their bodies. Stretch marks, loose skin, and discoloration affect most moms, but many aren’t aware that there are treatments available that can improve the look and feel trouble spots. Dr. Carol Clinton of Timeless Skin Solutions in Dublin, a medical spa that features the latest in prescription-grade skin care products and treatments, recommends these options to her patients:
For Stretch Marks:
Depending on the severity of stretch marks, improvement can be seen with use of topical products and/or the Titan™ procedure. Emu Oil is a highly moisturizing, natural skin softener with rejuvenating properties. It is recommended for use during and after pregnancy. Kojic acid and azelaic acid are both effective as lightening agents. By combing these topicals with Titan, a non-invasive procedure which reduces redness and improves elasticity, women can see results in as little as eight weeks.
For Discoloration:
Discoloration is a common side effect of pregnancy. It frequently appears on the face. Topicals that contain Kojic and/or azelaic acid can significantly improve skin discoloration. After pregnancy, retinA and hydroquinone can also safely be used for discoloration. For cases that require more intense treatment, Dr. Clinton recommends Pearl™ or Intense Pulse Light (IPL) therapy. Pearl combines the impact of resurfacing lasers with the gentleness and safety of non-invasive procedures to treat damaged skin. IPL passes through the top layer of skin and is selectively absorbed by brown, black or blue pigments particles within the skin. Those cells then break into miniscule particles that are removed by the body’s immune system.
For Loose Skin:
The Titan procedure is recommended to tighten the loose skin that remains after 9 months of pregnancy. While the procedure does not aid in weight loss, it does tighten the skin improving elasticity.
“It’s never too late to address skin issues related to pregnancy. Even if you had your children 20 or 30 years ago, you can still improve your skin’s tone and texture,” says Dr. Clinton.

Remove Body Hair Without Pain with Laser and Light Assisted Treatments
Remember when you were a teen-ager and you couldn’t wait to shave? Today you’d probably trade in your razor and shaving cream for a long-lasting alternative. Despite popular beliefs, there is a way to get long term hair removal without undergoing painful procedures like waxing and electrolysis. Dr. Carol Clinton of Timeless Skin Solutions in Dublin, Ohio features a laser hair removal treatment that is virtually painless and can be used on almost all body parts.
“The laser light targets the pigment in the hair follicle making the color break into miniscule particles. This heat, which damages the root of the hair, impedes its growth,” says Dr. Clinton. “The result is long-lasting smooth skin.”
With swimsuit season just months away, many men consider laser hair removal for trouble spots like the back and chest. Women like the procedure for underarms, bikini lines, and legs. But while laser hair removal is fast and effective, it is important to start treatments well before your summer vacation.
“The number of sessions a patient will need to undergo to experience complete hair removal varies. While laser hair removal is very effective at achieving long-lasting results, age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism all play a role in the location and thickness of hair on the body,” says Dr. Clinton.
Hair also grows in cycles. The laser targets hairs that are in the active growth phase of the cycle. Since some hair follicles may enter their growth cycles after a treatment, a patient may require multiple treatments for optimal results. The treatment is also safe to use on all people, even those with dark, tanned, or black skin. However, hair which is naturally blonde, white, or light red does not have enough pigment at the roots, and it cannot be reliably treated with any type of laser.
Laser hair removal is also a popular treatment for unwanted facial hair and ingrown hairs. If fact, the upper lip and chin are two of the most popular locations for laser hair removal for women and the neck for men. Dr. Clinton does not perform laser hair removal on eyelashes and eyebrows.
“There is a potential risk of damage to the eyes and eyebrow styles are constantly changing,” says Dr. Clinton.
Laser and light assisted hair removal offers long lasting results, and even if hair does eventually grow back, it is usually finer in texture and lighter in color than the original hair, and much less of a cosmetic problem. The most realistic expectation after laser treatment is long-term hair reduction. This means that after four to eight treatments, the total amount of hair is greatly reduced by 70-90 percent and the hair which does grow is often much finer and lighter in color.
Cost for laser hair removal ranges between $100 - $600 per treatment and is based on the area where hair will be removed.

Get Yourself Ready for Spring
This spring healthy skin is in fashion for everyone, not just women. Men and children have special skin needs too. Sunscreens are a must to prevent sunburns and aging. A daily moisturizer with a built-in sunscreen should be on the vanity of every bathroom. The broadest daily sunscreen is currently manufactured by LaRoche Posay called Anthelios. Cosmetic elegance with ease of absorption is a must and Anthelios has it. Taking time every morning to apply a moisturizer with sunscreen is a habit everyone should form.
In addition to protecting your skin, you may want to consider permanent hair reduction. Lasers designed to reduce or eliminate hair growth have been on the market for more than 20 years. All skin types can be treated with lasers, but individuals with dark skin tones should ask if the laser or light source being used for their treatment is best for their skin. Treatments typically take 5-60 minutes depending on the area and the size of the area where hair is being removed. Most lasers will permanently reduce hair 80-90%, although touch up treatments may be required biannually. Laser treatments can also be done on all body areas. That means no more back hair for men and no more bumps in the bikini area for women.
When spring cleaning your home, be sure to clean up your vanity. Toss products that are old or you found to be ineffective. Just as we find the need to change clothing and hair styles with age, skin care needs should also be adjusted. Products that worked last year may not be addressing your needs this year. Stop in and have a chat with an esthetician who can address your skin care needs.
Finally, enjoy your life. Make sure to make time each day for yourself. Eat well. Give love to those around you. Take a day of rest each week and try and keep the same time each day to rise and to go to sleep. You’ll develop a rhythm and then you’ll be able to accomplish all of those New Year’s Resolutions, which might have started collecting dust by now!

All Procedures Have Risks
Last week it was reported that BBC newsreader Kate Silverton is taking legal action against a leading surgeon after undergoing Fraxel laser surgery that left her face so badly marked she was unable to work for two weeks.
She's quoted as saying, "It's been awful. I went in to get some minor scarring on my cheeks treated...I was told it would be a routine procedure and I'd be back to work in days. The treatment, however, caused a massive skin reaction."
All procedures have risks. It is unfortunate that Kate had to endure this. Some people experience Fraxel as a no downtime procedure. However, the best use for the procedure, to repair acne scars, typically does require some downtime due to the depth and energy used in the procedure. When using higher energy, the risk for post inflammatory hypo and hyperpigmentation rise significantly. Swelling and redness can also be quite severe. Time and topical creams can improve discoloration, but results may be permanent.
If you have experienced negative side effects to Fraxel or other laser skin treatments, contact Dr. Carol Clinton at http://www.timelessskinsolutions.com/. I am able to treat conditions that occur from botched laser treatments.
