Restore Your Body After Baby
Carrying a baby and giving birth is a life changing experience. While the female body is designed to reproduce, the after effects can make women self conscious about their bodies. Stretch marks, loose skin, and discoloration affect most moms, but many aren’t aware that there are treatments available that can improve the look and feel trouble spots. Dr. Carol Clinton of Timeless Skin Solutions in Dublin, a medical spa that features the latest in prescription-grade skin care products and treatments, recommends these options to her patients:
For Stretch Marks:
Depending on the severity of stretch marks, improvement can be seen with use of topical products and/or the Titan™ procedure. Emu Oil is a highly moisturizing, natural skin softener with rejuvenating properties. It is recommended for use during and after pregnancy. Kojic acid and azelaic acid are both effective as lightening agents. By combing these topicals with Titan, a non-invasive procedure which reduces redness and improves elasticity, women can see results in as little as eight weeks.
For Discoloration:
Discoloration is a common side effect of pregnancy. It frequently appears on the face. Topicals that contain Kojic and/or azelaic acid can significantly improve skin discoloration. After pregnancy, retinA and hydroquinone can also safely be used for discoloration. For cases that require more intense treatment, Dr. Clinton recommends Pearl™ or Intense Pulse Light (IPL) therapy. Pearl combines the impact of resurfacing lasers with the gentleness and safety of non-invasive procedures to treat damaged skin. IPL passes through the top layer of skin and is selectively absorbed by brown, black or blue pigments particles within the skin. Those cells then break into miniscule particles that are removed by the body’s immune system.
For Loose Skin:
The Titan procedure is recommended to tighten the loose skin that remains after 9 months of pregnancy. While the procedure does not aid in weight loss, it does tighten the skin improving elasticity.
“It’s never too late to address skin issues related to pregnancy. Even if you had your children 20 or 30 years ago, you can still improve your skin’s tone and texture,” says Dr. Clinton.

Are you worried about your pore size?
Do You Have Porexia?
Allure Magazine recently published an article highlighting a growing quest for smaller pore size. The term "Porexia" was given by a professor of dermatology to describe our preoccupation with a desire for "impossibly small pores". In the pursuit of perfect skin, many consider large pores undesirable. Smaller pore size does reflect light better and gives a more youthful appearance. Pore size is largely determined by genetics, skin type and age. As we age, we start to lose collagen and elastin that help to support the pores causing them to sag around the edges and look larger (imagine what a deflated inner tube would look like).
We must remember that pores are a biologically necessary component to our skin and to get rid of them is impossible. However, there are some things that can be done to improve the size and appearance of them making them far less noticeable.
Over the counter products will help them to look clearer but once you stop the product, the pores will return to their original condition. Exfoliating cleansers with salicylic acid, lactic or glycolic acid all stimulate cell turnover and help to clean pores. Moisturizers should be oil-free with the addition of Vitamin C or retinol to increase cell renewal and collagen production. Sunscreen is a must and needs to offer both UVA and UVB coverage. Masks with algae firm the skin and masks with clay will absorb oil.
Unfortunatley, many people do not notice dramatic improvement with over the counter products. Timeless Skin Solutions provides a variety of products and procedures, only available through a physician's office, that offers more aggressive options in our quest for smaller pore size.
Our Obagi product line contains a system of products that work together to improve overall skin texture and tone. The prescription strength Retin A in this product will give more dramatic results than over the counter retinoid products to improve cell turnover. The system also includes prescription strength Hydroquinone which will improve any dark spots or hyperpigmentation in the skin that might have been caused by previous blemishes or sun damage. The Toner portion of the system will help with oil control and the exfoliator and sunscreen will help with cell turnover and help to prevent any future sun damage respectively. Our TNS SkinMedica system will give similar results as the Obagi line but with a less aggressive form of Retin A, retinol. This would be more appropriate for people with sensitive skin. Our Anthelios line of sunscreen is the only sunscreen on the market with the patent for the protection of short UVA rays. The short UVA rays penetrate deepest into the skin and are the rays of ultraviolet light that can pass through glass.
Our physician strength chemical peels combined with regular medical grade microdermabrasion (the Silk Peel in our office) will promote exfoliation to improve overall texture and rejuvenation of the skin. Intense Pulse Light combined with Laser Genesis will target uneven tone and decrease sebaceous gland activity to reduce oil production. This in turn will reduce the tendency of the pores to be clogged with sebum (oil) which leads to cleaner and smaller appearing pores. The IPL component of this treatment also moderately stimulates collagen which will reduce the laxity of the skin and will help to support the edges of the pores. The Titan 3-D procedure is combination of the IPL and Genesis along with the addition of the Titan laser. The Titan laser targets the fibroblasts in our skin which are the cells responsible for the production of collagen and helps to stimulate their activity. As we age, the fibroblasts slow down in their production of collagen which cause skin laxity. The skin laxity is usually most evident in the jowl line and neck but it also affects the edges of the pores as mentioned above.
All of the above products and procedures offer significantly more benefit than just reduction in pore size which we will be happy to review during the consultation process.

Putting Your Best Face Forward? How to Treat and Prevent Wrinkles
While your eyes may be the windows to your soul, your skin probably reveals much more about you than your eyes ever will. Years of skin neglect from too much time in the sun without sun protection leaves brown spots, wrinkles, and discoloration that can be aging. Fortunately, there are new treatments and products available that can help you recapture beautiful, healthy looking skin.
It’s never too early or late to take control of your skin. By adding the latest sun protection to your daily routine, you can protect your skin today and prevent long-term damage. But not all skin protectants are the same. You want to use a product that offers the broadest band of UVA protection. The ‘A’ stands for aging. Traditional sunscreens don’t offer UVA protection, and what’s so great about the “A” is that it prevents DNA from becoming altered. Anthelios SX by LaRoche Posay was recently approved by the FDA. This product has been used in Europe for years and is now available in the U.S. Unlike other sunscreens, Anthelios SX can be used as a daily moisturizer, making it easy to add sun protection into a daily routine.
While UVA protects skin, the latest in pharmacy-grade products can reverse damage. Just in recent years, research has proven that active ingredients like Vitamins C and E, Retinol, and Hyaluronic Acid, can dramatically improve the look of skin. Products available at drugstores and cosmetic counters may contain limited amounts of these ingredients, but prescription-grade products feature higher percentages of active ingredients leading to better results. There are a lot of great over-the-counter products that can help with moisturizing and offer some level of sun protection. But if you’re looking for noticeable improvement in your skin’s tone, texture and clarity, you’ll need a product that offers a higher percentage of active ingredients.
Sun damage and aging can also affect skin’s elasticity. While many products can improve skin’s clarity, non-invasive procedures like Titan can tighten the skin, soften fine wrinkles and shrink pores. This procedure is ideal for the forehead, lower face along the chin line, under the eyes, and also another age tattler…the hands. Titan uses an infrared light that travels through to the deeper layers of skin causing tightening of the collagen architecture. Because the heat is applied deep within the skin, results may be seen within a few weeks.
You don’t have to settle for the skin you have. The latest technologies and products make it possible to reverse damage and improve skin issues that may be related to heredity.

Titan Talk on Health Radio

This fall Dr. Clinton was a radio guest on the Barbra Alexander show on Health Radio. She spoke about a skin rejuvenation procedure she offers at Timeless Skin Solutions called Titan. You can listen to that program on the Web.
Titan utilizes a safe infrared light source with a unique wavelength filtering design to uniformly heat the dermis. The non-invasive Titan Procedure protects the epidermis through continous contact cooling while the infrared light heats the deep dermis. No down-time or pain medication is required. It is a nonablative, nonsurgical lifting procedure which causes the collagen in the dermis to contract and tighten. It is not a laser but it does employ infrared light to lift and tighten the skin so that gravity changes are softened, fine wrinkles are less obvious and pores are shrunk.
It can be used for tightening skin over various areas of the body, including the forehead, the lower face along the chin line, under the eyes, the hands, the abdomen, around the knees, and in some cases the breasts.
